New Record-Breaking Texas Roller Coaster Raises a Bigger Question About Purpose and the Risks That Shape Us

A new roller coaster in Texas is making headlines for aiming to do something few rides ever have, break six world records at once. Tormenta Rampaging Run at Six Flags Over Texas is expected to become the tallest, fastest, and longest dive coaster in the world, featuring a 309-foot climb, speeds reaching 87 mph, a towering vertical loop, and a beyond-vertical drop designed to deliver an intense experience.

On the surface, it is a story about engineering and entertainment. Bigger thrills. Bigger numbers. Bigger records.

But stories about the things people willingly choose often reveal something deeper.

Thousands of people will get in line knowing what is coming. They will watch others scream. They will feel the anticipation build. Then they will make a choice to buckle in anyway.

Maybe that is because purpose is rarely found by staying where things feel safe and predictable.

Many of the moments that shape our lives begin with uncertainty. Starting a new job. Launching a dream. Rebuilding a relationship. Moving to a new city. Taking a leap before we know exactly how things will unfold.

The climb is often uncomfortable. The view can feel uncertain. But growth often happens while we are moving.

Principles in Practice

Values help us understand why we care. Principles help us understand how we turn those values into action.

A value in this story could be courage, adventure, growth, or purpose. But principles help bring those values to life.

People are meant for more than comfort.

Every person has the capacity to grow and contribute. Sometimes we underestimate ourselves because we only see current limitations rather than future potential. Growth often begins when people are given the opportunity to stretch.

People thrive when they have ownership over their path.

No one forces riders onto a roller coaster. The experience matters because they choose it. In life and in communities, people often become more engaged when they are empowered participants rather than passive recipients.

Stay open to what challenge can teach you.

Fear and uncertainty do not always signal danger. Sometimes they signal possibility. Openness allows us to approach discomfort not just as something to survive, but as something that can shape us.

See people as contributors, not problems to solve.

Growth happens when we recognize the strengths and potential already inside people. Communities become stronger when we create conditions where people can discover and use those strengths.

Around the Dinner Table

What might this look like in everyday life?

• A child hesitates before trying out for a school play or sports team because they are afraid of failing. Do you encourage them to stay comfortable, or help them see growth in taking the chance?

• Someone at work has an idea but stays quiet because they are unsure whether it is good enough. How do we create environments where people feel empowered to contribute?

• A friend wants to start a side business, volunteer, or pursue a dream but keeps waiting for the “perfect time.” Is certainty always required before taking the first step?

• Your family has the choice to spend time doing something familiar, or trying something completely new together. What happens when we intentionally choose curiosity over routine?

Compass Check

What climb in your own life are you hesitating to take because you are waiting to feel completely ready?

Check the headlines, then check your compass.
